National fish advisory list released
EPA's National Listing of Fish Advisories was released in August 2004,
designed to be a annual, one-stop listing of public health warnings on
fish consumption nationwide. Although the report does not analyze trends,
at present 35 percent of the lake acreage and 24 percent of the river
miles are currently under advisory. Trends are difficult to establish
since states are responsible for issuing advisories and each has very
different criteria. For example, Alaska has no advisories and Minnesota
has over 1,000. Louisiana has 44 active advisories, 36 for mercury contamination
and 8 for other contaminants such as PCBs. Details are provided in the
links below.
